Prevention Works: Nurse Training Course on Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Problems

This 1-day course is for nurses who have little or no background in substance abuse prevention. It helps nurses become more involved in preventing and screening for ATOD problems and reinforcing healthy behaviors. Goals include increasing awareness of the need for substance abuse prevention, identifying roles nurses play in primary prevention, increasing nurses' knowledge base about substance abuse, increasing nurses' skills in preventing and screening for ATOD problems, exploring attitudes about cultural diversity, and helping nurses develop an action plan for primary prevention.

Learning Objectives

  1. actively participate in a learning community;
  2. demonstrate awareness of personal attitudes and stereotypes about ATOD problems;
  3. demonstrate increased willingness to assume a role in ATOD problem prevention; and
  4. identify ways to reinforce healthy behaviors and develop skills to screen and identify early signs of ATOD problems.
