Prevention Works: Social Worker Training Course on Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Problems

This course provides participants with an increased understanding of substance abuse prevention and how it relates to their social work. The course also provides information on the history and effective approaches to prevention and skills to reinforce healthy lifestyle behaviors and identify any early potential problems. Community consultation and referral skills are also emphasized.

The objectives are: (1) establish a learning community for prevention activities; (2) describe prevention in the context of a prevention continuum as it relates to social work practice; (3) incorporate adult learning techniques, systems theory, and cultural diversity issues into the daily practice of social workers with individuals, groups, work sites, and communities; (4) demonstrate the ability to incorporate screening techniques with all clients; and (5) develop and implement an action plan for increasing primary prevention of substance abuse.
