Prevention Works: Mental Health Specialists Training Course on Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Problems

This 1-day workshop is for mental health specialists, including social workers, school counselors, social service personnel, and others working as counselors. It is designed to provide increased understanding of the mental health specialist's roles and attitudes toward alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; knowledge about primary prevention of ATOD problems; and the skills to detect and appropriately refer clients with ATOD problems.

Learning Objectives

The objectives are: (1) clarify the mental health specialist's role in substance abuse prevention; (2) describe the history and development of prevention approaches; (3) define prevention; (4) demonstrate effective communication skills when discussing primary prevention and early identification; and (5) develop an action plan to integrate prevention into counseling practice.
