While the first set of concurrent workshops focused on the internal workings of the partnership itself, this set focuses on the community environment in which the partnership is embedded. The purpose of these workshops is to provide partnerships with tools to use in developing and shaping the strategies that they will use in involving their communities in AODA prevention work.
These workshops take off directly from Unit 4A, Community Mobilization. They are practical in orientation, covering a spectrum of tools for relating to the partnerships' external environments. They set the stage for the teams' reentry planning on Day 5 by giving specific techniques for mobilizing communities.
At the community meetings on Days 2 and 3, the lead trainer or coordinator should tell the teams that they are to decide how they will divide their members evenly among all of the workshops (small teams may send just one person to a few workshops). It is important that each team maximize its exposure to each of the workshops and to participants from other teams. This will make the team meeting after the workshops much richer for them.
Each workshop may be attended by varying numbers of persons from each team. In some settings, room size may require limiting the number of persons from each team who will be able to attend any given workshop.
At the community meeting ending Day 3, refer participants to HO-1: Workshop Information Sheet. Ask them to read this before they go to their workshops, and to make notes on it for use in reporting back to their teams.
Trainer outlines and notes for workshops appear separately in sections 4B(1) through 4B(6).
