I. Introduction (Opening, 30 min.)

Trainer Note: Because this is the first team time, the facilitator needs to begin by establishing a trusting relationship with the team.

Directions

A. Introduce yourself and describe the role of the team facilitator.

B. Ask participants to pair up with the person they know the least well in the group and spend 5 minutes getting to know that person. Let participants know they will then have to introduce that person to the group.

C. Ask for volunteers to introduce their partner. Continue around the room until everyone has been introduced.

D. Review the ground rules that were discussed in the previous session. Ask the group to add to the list any other norms they want to set for their team.

E. Describe the Team Diary, and ask for a volunteer to take responsibility for keeping it up to date.

F. Develop other roles (e.g., timekeeper) for team members if you choose.

G. Describe the partnership reentry plan that will be created by the end of the workshop, and refer participants to HO-3 in Unit 5B.

II. Team Vision (Individual and Small Group Activities, 60 min.)

Directions

A. Describe what a vision statement is, and explain the importance of developing one as a team.

Content Points
  1. A vision statement describes what the partnership hopes to accomplish as result of its work.

  2. A vision statement describes how the partnership wants the community to change. Visions embody the partnership's values and ideals for the future.

  3. Visions help guide the work of an organization. It is important for everyone to support a shared vision. The vision guides members in their daily decisions and actions.
Directions

B. Ask participants to turn to HO-1 and follow along as you read the handout. (HO-1: Vision Exercise Worksheet)

Trainer Note: You may elect to use the alternate exercise (found in TSupp-1) for those team/partnership members who may have difficulty moving (envisioning) from 1991 to 1995 (that is, from where their community partnership's prevention effort is now, to where it may be [or could be] 3, 4, or 5 years later). (TSupp-1: Alternate Vision Exercise and TSupp-2: Foresight First)

Content Points Tell participants to imagine, "It's the end of your grant period, and you're sitting at a partnership meeting getting ready to write your final report to CSAP. You reflect on the last 4 years-everything went great! It's hard to believe, but your community alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse prevention partnership did everything you had hoped. You start by answering the following questions."

Discussion Questions Directions

C. Ask each team member to spend 10 minutes writing a vision statement for his/her partnership.

D. After 10 minutes, ask participants to pair up with another team member and combine their vision statements. Allow 15 minutes for this activity.

E. Now ask each dyad to join another dyad to blend the 2 statements into one. After 15 minutes, bring the whole group back together.

F. Ask each foursome to read its vision statement.

G. Now ask the group as a whole to develop a single vision statement for the partnership that all team members support.

H. Spend the last few minutes letting participants describe how they felt in doing this activity. Assure them that this is not the final version, but a working version that will be used during the Institute.

III. Closing

Directions

A. Let the team know that after lunch it will be participating in an information exchange with other partnerships, and that it is important to be back from lunch on time.

B. Tell participants that they might want to think about what they would like to share with other teams about their partnership during the afternoon.
